Wondering if you qualify to become an egg donor? Have a look at this.
Between the ages 19-29
This age range is really common for egg donors because younger eggs typically result in higher success rates for pregnancies. If you’re between 19-29, you’re at the peak of your reproductive health, making you an ideal candidate for donation.
Regular Periods
Regular monthly menstrual cycles are an indication of healthy and consistent ovulation. This ensures that your reproductive system is functioning properly, making it easier to predict your fertility window and the success of your egg retrieval.
A Healthy BMI
A healthy body mass index (BMI) is really important. Why? Having a BMI under 28 helps reduce the risks associated with egg donation, including those related to anesthesia and the egg retrieval. It also supports healthy hormone levels and better egg quality.
Not Currently Smoking (or vaping)
Smoking can damage the quality of eggs. Nicotine and other chemicals can lead to poor outcomes, and increased risks during egg donation. You must be a non-smoker to become an egg donor. Note: if you’ve previously been a smoker but aren’t one anymore, this is usually okay! We encourage you to submit an application!
No Trends of Cancers in the Family
A family history of cancers (especially reproductive or hereditary cancers), can pose a risk to both you and the recipient of your eggs. Clinics and intended parents (commonly referred to as IPs) look for donors with minimal family history of cancer to make sure there are no genetic predispositions that could affect the health of their future family.
No Family Psychiatric History
Mental health can be hereditary, and it’s important to reduce the risk of passing down severe psychiatric disorders to potential children.
Not Currently Taking Psychiatric Drugs
Many psychiatric medications can interfere with the hormonal treatments involved in the egg donation process.
No STIs Within the Past 12 Months
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can affect egg quality, posing risks to both you and the recipient (IP).
Must Have Both Ovaries
Both ovaries are necessary for egg donation because they increase the chances of retrieving a sufficient number of healthy eggs. Egg donors with both ovaries have a better response to medications and a more successful retrieval outcome.
U.S. Citizen
You must be a U.S. citizen to comply with any legal, ethical, and logistical requirements for egg donation in the country.
Willing to Self-Administer Injectable Medications and Undergo an Outpatient Procedure
Egg donation involves self-administering hormone injections for several days (usually anywhere from 10-14). It also requires undergoing an outpatient procedure for egg retrieval itself. It’s important that you’re comfortable with these parts of the process. Side note- most of our donors say the injections weren’t as big of a deal as they expected! If you’re unsure, it’s best to do some research and chat with us. We’re happy to give more insight on what it’s like.
